Go on a whale safari to Mirissa which is about 50 min from Hikkaduwa. Starts early morning at 5 am. There you can see blue whales, dolphins and turtles. Back after lunch.
Visit the mangrove swamp on a lagoon tour. Begin at 8 am with a car ride half an hour then boat in the mangrove swamp. There you can see animals like varans, monkeys and birds. Staying on an island to see how they make cinnamon. After the boat trip you visit a turtle farm and a moonstone mine. Back for lunch.
To Sinharaja rainforest which is about 3 hours from Hikkaduwa. You start early morning and are back late afternoon. There you will see different birds, snakes and other reptiles.
Galle Fort is Sri Lanka's third largest city and is a World Heritage Site about 30-40 min from Hikkaduwa. We recommend to go in the afternoon because it is cooler. Very beautiful and nice to walk around the Galle Fort area discovered by the Portuguese in early 16th century. You can see different cultural buildings, restaurants and even shopping. On the way back to Hikkaduwa you will visit a silk producer.
A day trip to Yala National Park, where there are elephants, crocodiles, leopards, bears, monkeys, birds, etc. One way takes about 2.5 hours.
